Okura Nikko Hotel Management Co., Ltd. is pleased to announce that on January 20, 2022, it will open the Okura Kyoto Okazaki Bettei hotel in the world-famous and much-loved city of Kyoto, the former capital of Japan. A small luxury hotel, the new property will collaborate with the “GO ON” project launched by the heirs and supporters of traditional Kyoto crafts.

Original works of art by members of the GO ON project team incorporating new interpretations of Kyoto traditions will be on display in the hotel. Traditional works of art can be found throughout the hotel
The first-floor lobby is not partitioned, but is smoothly connected to maximize the view through the windows, making the most of the features of horizontally continuous Japanese architecture. It allows visitors to experience the handicrafts scattered throughout the building against a backdrop of modern Kyoto beauty.
The original lighting from Kyoto-based company Kanaami-Tsuji, created using wire mesh carefully woven by artisans from delicate individual strands of copper wire, adds a pop of color to the entry area. The wire mesh casts subtle shadows when the lights are on.
Tomoko Kawao, based in Kyoto shodo calligrapher artist active in Japan and abroad, produced a work titled feng ming zhao yang (a phoenix singing in the morning sun), which imbues the reception with elegant dignity. The work is intended to represent a happy sign of peace in the world, a message that has its origin in a Chinese legend. The ink drips and splatters are particularly impressive.
- From the reception to the guest rooms and the dining room
Nishijin textiles created by Hosoo, a long-standing company nishijin weaving company, hung on the wall leading from the reception to the bedrooms and the dining room. The elegance of the unique three-dimensional shimmering nishijin the fabric is intended to boost the morale of hotel guests.
- Elevator room
The walls are decorated with sumushiko (louver made from bamboo ropes) created by Kohchosai Kosuga, a longtime manufacturer of creative bamboo crafts. The bamboo trellises, each delicately finished, give an impression of the warmth of natural materials and invite guests to a more private space.
- Japanese garden
All guests can enjoy the rich natural environment of the temple next to the hotel. The plum and cherry trees in its garden explode with blooms in the spring and provide a spectacular golden backdrop of golden leaves in the fall, giving guests a sense of Kyoto’s four beautiful seasons.
Rooms in harmony with the surrounding landscape
The new hotel will offer 60 rooms on the theme of a mountain chalet. For guests, they will be peaceful oases of relaxation, marvelously combining tradition and modernity. Each room will have nishijin textiles expressing the reflection of the water at the lakeside as well as traditional Japanese-style shelving supported by wooden pillars of the famous Kitayama cedar, allowing customers to enjoy the feel of the natural texture of the wood. Art using karakami paper and a work of art created by calligrapher Tomoko Kawao will also welcome them.
Additionally, the illuminated room numbers in the hallways are fashioned to resemble tea tins made by famous maker Kaikado, the oldest such company in Japan.
