Targeted at meeting

Sandeep, 40, was targeted during a kabaddi tournament in the village of Mallian Khurd. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head and was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The cold-blooded assassination of one of the region’s biggest kabaddi tournament organizers has shocked the sports community.

Sandeep was targeted during a kabaddi tournament in the village. Friends transferred Sandeep to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead by doctors. He received several bullets in the head.

Sandeep Singh, originally from the village of Nangal Ambian, lived in England and is survived by his wife and two sons, both aged 5.

In a video of the incident that has gone viral, assailants are seen standing in the middle of trees shooting someone. At least seven to eight shots are fired near an open arena where a match was taking place. When the assailants opened fire, the tournament was interrupted midway and people ran for cover. The suspects then fled.

Sandeep, who was chairman of several tournaments, was visiting India to hold kabaddi events and attend weddings.

The former captain of the Indian team in circle-style kabaddi was the president of the Major League Kabaddi Federation and the Shahkot Lions Kabaddi Cup. He was also a Shahkot Lions team player. Friends said he worked to eradicate drugs through sport.

Sandeep was also one of the main organizers of the state sportsmen’s langar for farmers in Singhu, bordering Delhi. He had come specially from England to take part in the farmers’ agitation.

Nakodar Police Station, a police station house officer said Sandeep was shot dead during a tournament by four unidentified people. Police were trying to arrest the suspects, he added.

Ambala, March 13

Demanding the halt of trains, residents of several villages on Sunday blocked the Ambala-Saharapur railway line for nearly three hours at the Tandwal village station in Ambala.

Locals said trains stopped at the station before the Covid lockdown two years ago, but that’s not the case now. They said that before the pandemic, around 10 trains used to stop at Tandwal village station but this was halted due to Covid restrictions. The situation normalized, but the trains did not stop, they lamented.

Residents said they had petitioned railway officials and government officials for months, but to no avail. Residents of Tandwal, Ghelri, Tandwali, Raomajra and several other villages gathered at the station, held up slogans in support of their demand and also against the government. Later, they blocked the Ambala-Saharapur section by sitting on the rails.

Sushil, a protester, said: “Students, especially girls, laborers and other daily passengers, from around 12 villages used to travel through passenger trains to reach their destinations, but they are all face drawbacks. Previously, while their journey to Ambala City by train cost 10-20 rupees per person, now they have to spend around 70-80 rupees as they are forced to use other modes of transport. First, we reach Barara to take a bus to the cantonment of Ambala, then we take the car to reach the town of Ambala.”

They demanded the stopping of train No. 04523 (Saharpur-Nangal Dam) as it was heading towards Ambala, the stopping of 04501/02 (Saharapur-Una-Saharapur) and the resumption of the ten trains which stopped here before the pandemic.

After getting information, Senior Commercial Manager of Ambala Division, Vivek Sharma arrived at the scene and managed to calm down the protesters. He assured them that their demands would be taken to the railway commission and asked for time until March 31 for the same. They had informed the headquarters of the demands of the villagers.

Meanwhile, Mullana Congressman Varun Chaudhry said, “While the government claims to build railways over bridges and develop railway infrastructure, no attention is paid to providing services to the poor. I will be raising the issue at the Haryana Assembly in the coming days.

Travel becomes more expensive

Previously, our trip to Ambala town by train cost between 10 and 20 rupees per person. Now we have to spend around Rs70-80 as we are forced to use other modes of transport. First, we reach Barara to take a bus to the cantonment of Ambala, then we take an autorickshaw to reach the town of Ambala. Sushil, a protester

Born in a lesser-known village of Chohan with almost no sports infrastructure, Aasmeen Kaur, a class VIII student, made great strides in boxing by winning a broze medal at the Punjab state boxing championship sub-junior (52 -54 kg) held in Phagwara recently.

Compensating for the lack of infrastructure with his hard work and determination, Aasmeen has to travel to Amritsar, a distance of 30 km one way, to get coached at the Khalsa College boxing academy.

“Since the first confinement, I have been training at home. My family had created a small space for me. It’s not enough, but it still helped me in training,” said Aasmeen. As it was a big championship, she joined the academy led by coach Baljinder Singh for a month.

The 13-year-old started training three years ago. His father Harmandeep Singh said: “We did our best to provide him with the best training we could afford. With no facilities in our area, we have to spend two hours a day to take her to the academy and then bring her home.

Singh said she fell in love with boxing after watching matches on TV. “When she started training and people found out, everyone said what would happen if she broke a tooth or got a scar on her face,” he said.

“They were concerned that we would have difficulty finding a groom for her if she scarred her face,” Singh said. He said he was now proud to be the father of a national level player.
