The Southern Jackson County Fire Protection District (SJCFD) received a call at 5:02 a.m. on Thursday, December 16, 2021 regarding a structural fire at Block 11-I of Lake Lotawana. They arrived at 5:08 a.m.

Two alarms were raised to help the SJCFD: CJC, Lee’s Summit Fire, Lone Jack Fire, Pleasant Hill Fire, Sni-Valley Fire and Odessa Fire with their tankers as well as EMT units for the workforce.

Chief Bill Large reports the fire is a loss of $ 4 million with structure and contents.

Blocks 10-I and 12-I, owners of out-of-state homes, were called in because they had suffered minor radiant heat damage. They were able to return to their houses by the lake.

Firefighters managed to keep the fire away from their homes. No injuries were reported to owners or firefighters.

Chief Large said they had video of the Ring Gate camera from 1:08 a.m. to 3:30 a.m. with a fire. The SJCFD returned to the station around 3:00 PM to service their units and closely monitored the location of the “pancake fire” for any hot spots.

Chief Large said that according to the National Weather Service there had been lightning in the area about 1.5 miles away.

Chief Large would like to thank all surrounding fire departments for their assistance.

The fire is under investigation by the state fire marshal.

The time stamp on the camera is 5:04 a.m.
