Khanna village to build memorial to Swaranjit : The Tribune India

Ludhiana, June 23

Army jawan Swaranjit Singh, who was killed after a vehicle carrying army personnel fell into a gorge during an avalanche in Leh, was cremated in this Salaudi home village today Singha, Khanna, with full military honours.

Swaranjit’s body, wrapped in the tricolor flag, was transported in an army vehicle today. Villagers flocked there in large numbers to share the grief of the bereaved family.

Swaranjit’s younger brother, Sarabjit, also serves in the military. He asked the villagers to take care of his family because the death of his brother could not discourage him from leaving the army, he would rather continue to serve the country as a soldier.

“My brother joined the Indian Army in 2008 and a year later, I too joined the force. As our family was suffering from the financial crisis and we both wanted to serve the country, we joined the “army. Swaranjit was due to retire next year, but he left us too soon,” his brother said as he tried to control his emotions.

‘Although I lost my son and no one can bring him back, I am still proud to be the father of a serviceman who lost his life serving the military and the nation,’ a disconsolate dad says .

Sarpanch Mandeep Kumar said that the village would take care of the family of the deceased and even a memorial in the name of Swaranjit would be built in the village.

Police officers were also present for the occasion.
