Disbelievers set fire to tents and items at the dharna site in Khairampur village of Adampur Assembly segment in the district.

The police registered a case against six people from the village and opened an investigation in this regard.

The villagers have been holding a dharna for 66 days in front of the public school to lobby for filling the teaching positions at the school. The dharna is led by the Siksha Bachao, Bachao Samiti school in the village. The villagers alleged that a group of youths, who were dancing to the tunes of a DJ to celebrate the victory of the BJP candidate on Sunday night, reached the dharna site and set fire to the curtains and documents and are away from the place.

Later, the police were notified of the incident. A young Dinesh filed a formal complaint with the police. The villagers identified the youths as Chhotu Punia, Inder Bhadu, Manjeet, Rahul, Bharta Punia and Ishwar Chahar. A police team went to the scene and opened an investigation. A police spokesman said a case was registered on Monday under Sections 147 (riot), 149 (unlawful assembly), 379 (theft) and 435 (mischief by fire or any explosive substance having the intention to cause, or knowing that it is probable that he will thereby cause damage to any property) of the IPC against the identified young people.

Vinod Kumar, part of the village, said there were around 120 students at Government Girls High School but only two teachers were assigned here as some teachers were transferred from the school during the recent transfer campaign of teachers. “The dharna has been going on for 66 days and continues even after this incident,” he said, adding that they wanted strict measures against those who indulged in such misdeeds.
