Amritsar, January 23
Tension gripped the village of Bhindi Aulakh in Ajnala after its residents caught a youth for allegedly attempting blasphemy.
A video made at the shrine by people has also surfaced in which he was seen admitting he had been lured into a person to attempt sacrilege.
Police authorities later took the youth into custody and opened an investigation. He struggled to appease residents and assure them that appropriate action would be taken against him following an investigation. The incident happened late Saturday night.
So far, the police have him charged with theft and criminal trespass. He has been remanded in custody for further investigation, confirmed Deepak Hilori, SSP, Amritsar Rural, here.
The suspect identified as Gursahib Singh was caught by people for entering the village gurdwara by jumping over the wall. He was beaten by them.
In a video, while answering people’s questions, he confessed to being lured by a certain Ganna from the same village for attempted sacrilege. He offered Rs1 lakh for the same but he declined. However, later he entered the gurdwara to see if anyone was there after luring him with intoxicants. He said that Ganna stole money from Golak of gurdwara. However, people were saying in the video that no other youngsters were found in the CCTV cameras.
“After a preliminary investigation, the police charged him under Articles 380 (theft from the dwelling), 457 (concealed intrusion or burglary at night with a view to committing an offense punishable by imprisonment) of the ICC. Appropriate action would be taken after the matter was investigated. Ganna’s background was also reviewed,” Hilori said.
