A woman found dead in the elevator shaft of the Aizawl Hotel
Aizawl, April 20: A 30-year-old woman was found dead in a hotel in Aizawl six days after she went missing, police said on Wednesday.
Police said they suspect the woman, a resident of Lunglei town in southern Mizoram, fell in the hotel lift shaft due to a faulty lift door.
Her family, however, claimed she was murdered.
The woman disappeared from Lushai Hills Residency hotel in Zarkawt neighborhood on April 14, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Headquarters) Lalbiakthanga Khiangte told PTI.
She arrived in Aizawl with her boyfriend on April 13 to enter a competition and they were staying at the hotel, he said.
After her boyfriend filed a missing person report with police, an investigation was launched and the woman’s decomposed body was found at the bottom of the elevator shaft on Tuesday night, the officer said.
According to the preliminary investigation, it is suspected that the woman fell into the shaft of a faulty elevator door in the hotel lobby. The door was supposed to be closed when the elevator wasn’t on that floor, he said.
The couple drank in their hotel room on the night of April 13. After the boyfriend fell asleep around 10 p.m., she drank more alcohol, the officer said.
After carefully reviewing CCTV footage, it is believed the woman never left the hotel, he said.
The boyfriend, 38, is now in custody for further questioning, he said.
However, the woman’s family claimed she was murdered.
The woman, the eldest of four siblings, had been in a relationship with the man for seven years, and both loved each other passionately, the family said.
The woman repeatedly proposed marriage to him but his family refused, they alleged.
